What an awesome day! But I'm tired, like everybody else, so off to bed ... I've got to prepare tomorrow's lesson so that it tops today's lesson. This afternoon Shane and I combined our classes for a spectacular explosion of bicarbonate (baking soda) and vinegar sending our rocket ships soaring through the air, of course, not without making a mess, especially of our teammate, Lisa, who received a nice shower of baking soda and vinegar. The campers had a blast and a great laugh as they watched the rockets soar high and the teachers get soaked.
The campers learned a new idiom during sports workshop, "keep your eye on the ball". Teaching the basics of baseball can be a challenge when communicating through cultural and language differences, but "wow" how the campers picked up the game. I got nailed more the once, thank God it was a whiffle ball or I'd break one of my own rules, rule #5 - 'no injuries'.
The best part of the day was the game between class six and class seven. Though we missed a golden opportunity to teach the campers an American song ... can you guess which one? "Take me out to the ball game." They enjoyed the game so much that they requested another of baseball so it looks like even in Poland we can sing, "For its one, two, three strikes your out at the old ball game."
However, the key teaching for our campers has been that it doesn't matter how many strikes that they've made in life, Jesus steps in at the pinch hitter and knocks the ball out of the park. His love and grace is ultimately what we share with the campers, whether we're teaching, playing, singing, eating, or just hanging out.
